Everyone does it. We watch a television show, see a DIY commercial, or flip through a magazine and all of a sudden we are transported into "trendy land!" We are made to believe that everything that is beautiful or stylish in home interiors consists of granite, brushed nickel, and barrel lampshades! Have you ever noticed that almost every "home" show, DIY commercial, or ad all project the same image? Even the little "idea" brochures at the paint counter in your home improvement stores shows rooms all decorated basically the same. So are we all supposed to have mid-century modern sofas, vessel sinks, and minimalist drapes with grommets? Will we really never have any resale value until there are granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances in our kitchen? The definitive answer is a big old NO!!!! As with anything projected by the media, we are constantly brainwashed into believing that we must alter our own taste to follow that which is "trending." Home fashion is the same as clothing fashion--- TRENDY,TRENDY,TRENDY!!!! So that brings us to the whole topic of defining YOUR own style.
Style by definition is a phenomenon that gives birth to an art or architectural motif that distinguishes one era from another. The style of Louis XIV is no less stylish today than it was in 1650, technically! The point is that all great "style" is for us to meld and mold into our own interpretation. Surround yourself with things that you love. Establish your living space around that which brings you pleasure. If your taste in furnishings leans towards colonial then decorate with pieces that you love regardless of what someone on a home design show says. Now within all decor and design there are techniques and rules that just like a good recipe will give you optimal results. With skills in hand you can decorate to suite your own personal style.
